Today’s FreddieSez is our chance to wax a bit poetic and look at man’s attempt to capture dog in a simple quote. How do humans take the unique characteristics of our once prehistoric foe. turned best friend and companion for eternity, then find a way to turn a phrase that satisfies the full breath and wideth of that relationship? Ah, there’s the rub, could one do it AND in doing it, would the unique nature of the dog be done justice in the deed?

Over the next few paragraphs we will take nine existing quotes and examine each to break down the quote’s merit. Did the author make a valid point? Did they make us think or force us to examine our stance on a subject?

Here are nine of our favorite Dog Focused quotes, in no particular order, for you to review and enjoy…

1) “Dogs have given us their absolute all. We are the center of their universe. We are the focus of their love and faith and trust. They serve us in return for scraps. It is without a doubt the best deal man has ever made. ” – Roger A. Caras

Caras has found the absolute truth of the matter, we don’t deserve dogs. The unconditional devotion and love with the ask of nothing in return but the same. Dogs never give up on their people, even when we don’t deserve them. If a dog is abandoned on a street corner and the owner comes back two hours later after a change of heart… if the dog no less happy to see them. No, in fact, the dog is overjoyed that their best friend has returned. If a dog is scolded, their immediate reaction is to attempt finding a way to overcome their offense and just make their person happy again.  A dogs devotion is unlimited, their desire to please is bottomless. We have been given a gift that we rarely can fully appreciate.

2) “No one appreciates the very special genius of your conversation as much as the dog does.”  – Christopher Morley

Dog’s like it when you spill the Tea! Tell me that you don’t whisper your deepest/darkest secrets to your dog, things that you wouldn’t tell another soul… and I will call you a liar! Dogs are the worlds best and least expensive physiologists. They pass no judgment, they are never shocked by anything you say, they always enjoy a good story and they are riveted by a bad one. Dog’s laugh at all your jokes, don’t over talk you and let you get the first, last and every word in during the conversation. You are always the smartest and most influential person in the room when you’re in a deep back and forth with your dog.

3) “Dogs come into out lives to teach us about love, they depart to teach us about loss. A new dog never replaces an old dog. It merely expands the heart.” – Author Unknown

Its a shame the author is unknown on this quote, because this person really had a deep insight into the circle of a dog lovers life.  A dog looks you in the eyes and surrenders his entire soul, his life and being, to you. In their minds, you are devoted for all time. There is no doubt you are bonded in the ties of eternity and they will be at your side, always. The truth is, there is an “expiry date” on your relationship that exists the minute you meet… its just beyond the vision of either party on the trip. And when that moment comes, the unavoidable separation where one of your is gone and the other is left to plod along, you are forced to learn about the depth of loss. If that bond is fully developed and the love is unconditional in a two way flow, then the pain is that of losing a child.  You can look for a replacement but a new dog can never replace and old… you simply start to fill the whole in your heart with new spackle and paint. Eventually the wall will look the same and the room will feel comfortable… but deep inside there will always be a hole in the wall.  This quote is awesome.

4) “I’m a lot less cranky when it’s just me and my dog.” – Bob Peterson

You know, this one was a head scratcher… how mad are you when you walk through the door and the dog has chewed up the remote or turned over the trash can or eaten a couch cushion? But, on the opposite side, eventually don’t you tell that same story and laugh? Most of you do, and so does everyone that hears the ridiculous tale.  When you talk about devastation of the soul, your dog reacts like he has lost everything because he disappointed you. Then works so hard to get back into your good graced to make up for his error. Dogs have that way of making up for their mistakes by doing nothing, but in doing nothing they are working so hard to overcome the mistake that you can only forgive them.

The other side of this quote is when your dog senses your upset or blue. Its that silent connection between the two of you. They know that just by being close or laying their head on your knee, even listening but not understanding as you rant about the things that you’re upset about… they know, eventually, the stress and grief will reduce and happy you will return.  Dogs are physic friends, without call and 888 number. Bob gets it and his quote was spot on, Spot approved.

5) “Did you ever walk into a room and forget why you walked in? I think that is how dogs spend their lives.”  – Sue Murphy

This is the entire “Dogs have no conception of time or space” theory in a neat quote. Imagine how freeing it would be to so happy to see someone every time they appeared. It almost be like a magic trick that you can never figure out but its so awesome that you love seeing it. Regardless if you’re gone 5 minutes or 5 days, your dog is SUPER happy you’ve returned. Your human partner is NOT matching that level of happy, not every single time. The things that dogs are shocked at is awesome, as well. If you fix a dinner and put it down… it’s amazing and appreciated! If you help them on the couch, INCREDIBLE. If you go to the bathroom and come back, UNBELIEVABLE! If you throw hide behind a door a jump out, LOOSE THEIR MINDS!!! How cool would it be if you could spend a day in the innocent and carefree world of a dog. No one is saying a dog is brainless or stupid, dogs are actually rather brilliant and learn in volume. They just hold onto their innocence, kind hearts, trust and love far longer than humans could ever imagine.  Dog’s are lucky they have this hole in their memory, it keeps them from seeing behind the curtain and finding out what the Wizard of Oz really looks like.

6) “I don’t think twice about picking up my dog’s poop, but if another dog’s poop is next to it, I think, ‘Eww, dog poop!”  – Jonah Goldberg

This quote is awesome… because its 100% TRUE! Its also proves that dogs are not just animals, they are family. Lets face it, we wouldn’t do a lot of things for strangers that we routinely do for our families. We touch things, eat things, take trips, look at stuff, smell things, go in dark scary places, put ourselves in odd and difficult situations for those we love that we NEVER would for strangers. The same is true for your loyal dog and THAT means the dog is has reached inner circle, family status.  Not many of you would pick up a strange dogs poop in the park on on the sidewalk, you just detour around it and complain about the dog, their people and the offending poo! But your tag and bag your dogs poop, carry it for the length of the hike and then drop it off in the trash AND praise the dog for a job well done!! Apparently, family is measured by the poop you are willing to lift!

7) “If I have any beliefs about immortality, it is that certain dogs I have known will go to heaven, and very, very few persons.” – James Thurber

Thurber had this right. A great writer, cartoonist and humorist, Thurber understood the pure heart of dogs and their good nature at heart. No dog is malicious by choice or desire, only by nature. Humans, on the other had, having thought and free will never fail to disappoint in their willingness to lean into their selfish nature at the expense of those who trust and depend on them the most. A dog believes in loyalty, dependability, unconditional love and devotion above all else. Certainly that is the key to any  gate that heaven would lock. If one was lucky enough to go to heaven, my assumption is it is full of furry faces, ball chases and long naps in warm places.

8) “My dog is worried about the economy because Alpo is up to $3.00 a can. That’s almost $21.00 in dog money.” – Joe Weinstein

Funny by design, Mr. Weinstein’s quote is actually an apropos statement about the aging of dogs. To watch your best friend age so rapidly from pup to toddler to teen to adult to senior is heartbreaking. All dogs age differently but the idea of dogs aging 7 years to every 1 human year plays out in most relation ships. Hair thins and grays, walks shorten, jumps that used to be easy are now impossible, naps are longer and you can see time passing in their faces. As time passes, we tend to ignore the signs of age and lean into everyday life until, one day, we realize they are in the winter season of their time with us. $21 in dog money is a hefty toll to pay if you haven’t enjoyed the price per can during the Spring and Summer of a dogs life.  Never take your dog for granted, never miss a moment of their joy in living because you can’t get it back once they move on.  Enjoy each phase of your dogs life with them and for them, as they are with you.

9) “Dogs do speak, but only to those who know how to listen.”– Orhan Pamuk

Perhaps this quote has the most truth of any we’ve covered. There is no language barrier between humans and dogs, they speak to us every day in their own way. Our problem is that we do not listen. Open your heart and you can hear your dog, look into their eyes, focus on their needs, seek out the connection the dog seeks and you can communicate at a level you never realize existed. Dogs speak the language of unconditional love, trust, devotion and faith in you. All you have to do is tune in and give back time and energy. “Be one with the dog” and you will hear volumes and speak in a language you’ve always known.

For the Cat lovers out there, we didn’t completely forget you! here is a bonus quote about the Feline persuasion…

“Owners of dogs will have noticed that, if you provide them with food and water and shelter and affection, they will think you are God. Whereas owners of cats are compelled to realize that, if you provide them with food and water and affection, they draw the conclusion that they are God.” – Christopher Hitchens

,,, you can’t argue with that!

Well, that was our look at nine of the best quotes about dogs from various times and authors. We believe its fairly broad and represents and good look at who dogs are, what they are all about and why we don’t deserve them! Love your dog as if its the last day you’ll see them, in their mind… it always is and then “THERE YOU ARE AGAIN”!
