A Look at the Top Trends and Technology in the Pet Care Industry

The pet care industry is a rocket ship that blasted off, cleared our atmosphere and shows no sign of reentry any time soon! In our fairly new, and ever expanding, pet friendly world… the amount of money proud pet parents are spending on their fur kids, bird buddies, scaly sons and daughters, hoofed homeboys, and every other type of animal that one can call a pet, is beyond comprehension. We think its a good idea that you all sit down for this part of our report… 2023 the pet care industry added 303 BILLION (with a B) dollars into the US economy. The kicker is, this was a 16% increase over 2022, and 2024 is looking as if it will smash last years records. Trends are showing that, if things continue at the present pace or even bigger, the Pet Care Industry will be a 550 BILLION (with a BIGGER B) dollar industry by 2032. It appears that taking care of the fur friends is immune from the economic woes and financial pinch we hear about every day. Lets be honest… Fido, Miss Kitty, Tweety, and Mr. Ed aren’t making their own doe-ray-mi… pet parents are willing to break their piggy banks to assure their pets feel, look, eat, play, travel, wear, and live their best life every day.

For some quick comparison… the US food service industry is forecasted to make 997 billion dollars in 2024. Our country spent 4.8 TRILLION dollars on human healthcare in 2023, and the travel industry made over 2 TRILLION dollars in 2023. So, the pet care industry has a long way to go to be in a grouping with these giants money makers… but there is hope for pets to catch up. There are over 330 million people in the US, compared to over 400 million pets. The pets have ground to make up to be in the same class as what humans spend on humans… but its possible that we’ll see a day in the near future where spending on our pets will enter the top 10 of all industries in this country.

So What IS the Pet Care Industry?

Great question and we’re glad you asked. Pet care involves all the practices, services, and products aimed at ensuring the health, well-being, and safety of domesticated animals. This wide definition includes:

  • Proper Nutrition: Pet food in all forms & supplements

  • Regular Veterinary Care and Health Maintenance: This includes all veterinarians, emergency & urgent care hospitals, the equipment and supplies they use, brick and mortar buildings, medications (both Rx and over the counter).

  • Grooming and Training: Which is everything from exercise to shampoos to clippers to clickers, to brushes and blow dryers. Any home products that provide a safe and comfortable living environment are also included here.

  • Toys, Enclosures, and Clothing: The world of fashion for pets is a multi-million dollar enterprise. Toys, leashes, collars, cages, pet beds, dog car seats, pet seats for bicycles, and so much more.

As new needs, treatments, and indulges emerge in the marketplace, old standards are replaced by new lifestyle products that rival anything you can buy your flesh and blood human children. The world of pet supplies, and luxuries, has been “turnt up” and our pet loving society is wild about it all.

Who are the Giants in the Pet Care Industry

It’s a name of names you’ll easily recognize as Name Brands you’ve used most of your life, and some news companies that have launched (or bought) their own pet care divisions. Here are the top 5 corporations in the Pet Care World…

  • #1) Mars – that’s right, the M&M folks have their chocolate covered fingers in the world of pets. Mars operates in four HUGE business verticals in our country and around the world. You’ll see their name on pet brands like Whiskas, Pedigree, Royal Canin, Sheba, and Orijen. Their newest pet food launch was a premium cat food line in India under the IAMS name.

  • #2) Nestle – N-E-S-T-L-E-S, Nestle makes the very best… Pet Food? Another candy and chocolate maker that has diversified into other foods, beverages and now they have their Crunch Bar hands into the world of pets. You’ll know their companies as Purina, Friskies, Fancy Feast, Purina Dentalife, and Cat Chow.

  • #3) Spectrum Brands – No not the cable and Internet folks. This Spectrum is a US based home-essentials company that specializes in home lock-sets. However, they make quite a bit of money selling pet specialty products and supplies. If you have ever purchase products with the brand names Litter Maid, Dingo, Furminator, SmartBones, GloFish or Tetra… then you’ve bought from Spectrum Brands.

  • #4) Symrise – This food and beverage manufacture, who is based in Germany, is focused on pet food and pet nutrition products. The most recently made headline when they acquired Wing Pet Food. They are in building stages of a 65.5 million dollar state-of-the-art manufacturing operation in South Carolina.

  • #5) The J.M. Smucker Company – With a name like Smuckers, they have to be in the… pet care industry? Believe it or not, the jelly fellas also manufacture coffee, peanut butter, Twinkies, and a large portfolio of pets foods and snacks. You’ll know them as brands like Milk-Bone, Meow Mix, Canine Carry-Outs, Milo’s Kitchen, and Pup-peroni.

Keep in mind, there are over 17,000 “establishments” in the US that have their hands in the Pet Care World. This includes the mega monster companies we listed above, down to the single location or single product companies that provide things our pets need.

What is HOT in the Pet Care Industry Right Now?

What isn’t? But some of the fastest growing items in Pet Care are some things that might not have popped up on your pets radar… yet! But to keep up with the fuzzy Jones, you might want to get ready for some of this to be on your fur kids Christmas list this year.

  • Pet food delivery services: PetSmart, PetCo, and Chewy are names we all know. They will bring EVERYTHING from their warehouse to your doorstep, and if you buy enough they will do it without shipping charges. These big folks also offer discounts if you setup a regular subscription delivery service on your most used products.

New players in this space are the “Fresh Food” companies like The Farmers Dog, Ollie, Pets Table, We Feed Raw, Spot & Tango, and Nom-Nom… to name a few. Most of these services make fresh food tailored to your pets specific likes, dietary needs, breed, or medical requirements. Pricey, yes… but most of it is guaranteed to be your pets favorite thing EVER.

  • Smart Pet Feeders: Talk about walking into the age of the internet! Smart Pet Feeders are locked down for portion control, WiFi enabled so you can check in on the food left, portion size, time to distribute food, and some even have onboard LED cameras so you can check out your pets while they eat. Yes… the even have night vision cameras so you can sneak a peak of your fur kids chowing down at night. Why don’t they have these for human kids, husbands, or the Mother-in-Law in your guest room?

  • GPS Pet Trackers: These tracking collars for your pets are waterproof, battery operated, web enabled, easy to install, GPS locators with Smart Abilities. They can link up with your invisible fence so you get up to the minute alerts on your dog going all “Prison Break” and them give you the ability to track them down with your smart phone. Imagine if you could put one of these on your kids or spouse!!

  • Pet Cameras: Treat your fur kids even more like your human child with a pet monitor and camera. Much like the Pet Tracker, these indoor cameras are cutting edge technology that allow you to check in on your pets when you’re out. These WiFi enable, remote access control, spy cameras can come with motion detectors, night vision capabilities, sound and two way sound and talk (If you talk to your pet and they answer you… you have a much bigger problem than them getting out of their cage or eating some trash). With up to 2K video clarity, its the next best thing to being there… or stalking there.

  • Automatic Litter Boxes: That’s right, a robot litter box that cleans your cats poop, drops it into a compartment below the box (and some models bag it for you), provides some level of freshener to cut the smell, and can notify you when the litter needs changing or the pan is full. These modern marvels won’t operate if your cat is “sans poop”, so the cat won’t freak out that ghosts are craving their droppings. The only thing they don’t do is wipe your cats bum and tell them how well they did in their pooping efforts. But if you have a Pet Camera with two way video and audio, you can chime in remotely. It’s the next best thing to being there… it’s probably better than being there!

Even more cutting edge new technology that you’ll see rising up in the ranks are things like:

  • Lick Mats – which are used to provide mental stimulation and slow down the feeding activity. These mats are make of rubber or silicone, have textured grooves or valleys so food and treats will sink down and your pet has to slow down and work for their dinner and snacks.

  • Apple Air Tag Collar – It’s just what it says… an Air Tag that attaches to the pets collar and allows you to track the pet and find the location. They are chew-resistant and made of non-toxic materials.

  • Dog Car Beds – these are designed to be the ultimate comfort and safety location for your dog on the go. Normally designed for the back seat, they create a cozy resting place for long and short car rides. You can get your dog car bed in a hammock, bucket, or cushioned bench seat design.

  • Freeze Dried Dog Treats – And you thought the Astronauts were the only ones treated to freeze dried food… HA! These dog treats are healthy, flavorful, and easy to handle dog treats that won’t make a huge mess. Because they have ZERO moisture due to the freeze drying process, these treats won’t grown bacteria and have an increased shelf life. Neil Arfstrong approved!

  • Pet Air Purifier – Yes PLEASE! This is a specially designed purifier that is made to attack and eliminate pet odors from your environment. The product features an advance filtration system, HEPA filter, and carbon activated filter. If this doesn’t trap and kill your pet odors, they are doing it on purpose just to annoy you!

  • Tofu Cat Litter – Yep, really… a litter made from soybean dregs (a byproduct of processing soy milk). This modern miracle is lightweight, easy clumping, long-lasting, offers reduced litter tracking, and helps keep down the odor. It’s 100% natural and non-toxic, so it can be flushed away! It also makes a great stir-fry (okay, maybe we made-up the last one!).

  • Dog Probiotics – As in humans, this probiotic (which can come in many forms) will aide in digestion and gut health. It works to break down food, contains needed nutrients, and will help to strengthen immunity in your Good Boi!

The future in the Pet Care Industry is really becoming a blurred line with human care and comfort products. Who knows what innovative, creative, and life changing innovations are on the horizon.

We hope this look at the world of The Pet Care industry was eye opening, hope generating, and interesting to you. As the saying goes, the future is now. The future is also only bound by the limits of our minds. Who knows, one day they could come up with a language modulator that allows you and your pets to communicate verbally. Maybe a pill that cures Parvo, or an injection that recreates missing cartilage in joints of arthritic dogs that will last a lifetime. The longer our pets live, the better our lives will be. So strap in and point your eyes to the next chapter in Pet Care and Wellness!

That’s it for today’s Dog Blog. It’s like we spent a few minutes in a Pet Focused Epcot Center! We will be back next week with another look at the world of pets, and their human companions. Don’t forget that fall weather will bring the return of flu, Covid, and other transmittable illnesses. Be sure you know who your dog is playing with, that their boarding facility or training class is infection free. Dogs can carry illnesses on their fur that you can pick up with casual contact. Be safe, be cautious, and be careful.

Till we meet again next week, we hope you fall into September and enjoy the changing weather, carve out time for your and your pets together, that your stress and worries are light as a feather, that you don’t dress your pet in pleather… and that you always take the time to be Pet Friendly, FreddieSez!
